I believe that you may find a wider adoption in radios that have these. I don't know if you'll find any of this useful apart from the idea that perhaps you should get a couple USB SD card readers (read/write) and microSD to SD card adapters, then use SD or microSD cards for your audio.

I suppose if I listened to my own audio stuff more, I'd invest in some bluetooth stuff and depart with all the wires and adapters.

I got one of those cheap adapters (3.5 mm to cassette) back when I had a portable CD player (discman-type), and I plug my phone into that to either stream music or play from the microSD card library. but one does have a cassette tape player. My vehicles are so old that they don't have an 3.5 mm jack or USB jack or SD card slot. I almost bought-in to the whole iPod thing, but before the budget allowed that luxury, I ended up with a smartphone that could do that job too. which can be transferred to my phone, or with an adapter card to my laptop, or with a USB adapter even my full-sized PC.

I use my PC mostly, but also have tunes and other audio files on my tablet on a microSD card. or something on the go, like the walkmans and iPods? You can always go for a computer or audrino or raspberry pi project that is setup for just that type of thing.Īre you looking for something to use at home, as a Hi-Fi (jamming to tunes at work (or in the shower) system. I know that it was a feature about 10 years ago on some car stereos, as you mentioned. I'm sure there must be a few that have been made, but I don't remember any stereo systems or even desk / tabletop radios that can play music from a USB stick. I know some mp3 players have the ability to play files off of an SD card but that is not what I am looking for. The second option I wonder about is are there any mp3 players that can actually play files off of a USB flash drive that you can plug into the mp3 player, instead of requiring you to transfer the files onto the internal memory of the mp3 player? I am not sure this second idea actually exists, but it would be helpful because even though I have a USB flash drive on my keychain, I do not think I want to carry around an mp3 player attached to my keychain and therefore I do not always have my mp3 player with me. I realize a lot of newer car radios can play files directly from USB drives but home stereos/ radios that can do this seem to be less common. Not really what I am looking for because I would rather just have a smaller radio that is not as expensive but still can play off of the USB port.

There was only one large stereo system at Meijer that could play from USB and it was really expensive and had fancy things like the ability to play files from a BlueTooth connection. However I looked at stores such as Meijer and most radios that have USB ports only have the ability to charge devices plugged into the USB port but no ability to read and play files on a USB flash drive. I already know that there are stereo systems that actually can play mp3 files through the USB port. I want to be able to listen to the files without a computer.

The reason I want such a device is because I often do not have convenient access to the internet or a computer and sometimes download the files at the library on the flash drive on my keychain. This is because I download a lot of audio files online - not only music but also a number of audio recordings of sermons / messages on various subjects. I decided I want to eventually buy either a radio or mp3 player that can play files directly off of a USB flash drive. So I thought I would give this question a try here. In the past I have found very good technical advice on this forum, even for topics not amateur radio related.
